Monthly vs once-off website pricing: which is better?
When you get a website built, you will usually be offered one of two ways to pay: a large once-off fee upfront, or a smaller amount every month. Neither is a trick — they suit different situations. Here is how to work out which is right for you.
How once-off pricing works
You pay a single build fee, often several thousand to tens of thousands of rand, and the site is yours. It sounds clean, but read the fine print: hosting, your domain, security and future changes are usually billed separately after that. So the once-off fee is really the start of the spending, not the end of it.
How monthly pricing works
You pay a smaller amount each month, and that price rolls in the build, hosting, domain, security, SEO and ongoing support. There is little or no upfront cost, and the price is predictable. The trade-off is that you keep paying while the site is live — which is fair, because a website is not a once-off object, it needs hosting and upkeep every month to stay online.
The honest comparison
- Cash flow: monthly wins easily — you are not finding a big lump sum before the site earns anything.
- Total cost over years: a once-off build can work out cheaper eventually, but only if you factor in what you separately pay for hosting and maintenance.
- Predictability: monthly is one known number; once-off can hide extra invoices later.
- Support: monthly usually includes help and changes; once-off often charges per change.
Which should a small business choose?
For most small businesses, especially newer ones, monthly is the sensible choice. It removes the barrier of a big upfront cost, keeps everything bundled into one predictable price, and means someone is looking after the site rather than leaving you to sort hosting and updates alone. A once-off build makes more sense if you have the cash upfront and you are happy to manage the running costs yourself.
