How much does a website cost in South Africa? (2026 guide)

“How much does a website cost?” is the first question almost every business owner asks, and the honest answer is: it depends on who you ask. In South Africa you will find quotes anywhere from R2,000 to well over R50,000 for what sounds like the same thing. This guide breaks down why the range is so wide, what you are actually paying for, and how to compare quotes without getting caught out.

Why website prices vary so much

The word “website” covers everything from a single page with your contact details to a large site with online booking, a product catalogue and card payments. The price follows the amount of work, so the first thing that moves the number is simply how much site you need.

The second thing is who builds it. A big agency carries offices, sales teams and account managers, and that overhead ends up in your quote. A freelancer or a small studio carries far less of that, so the same site can cost a fraction of the agency price without the quality dropping.

The typical price ranges in South Africa

As a rough guide for 2026, here is what you can expect to see quoted:

  • DIY builders (Wix, Squarespace): R0 to a few hundred rand a month, but you build and maintain it yourself and it still needs your time and skill.
  • Freelancers and small studios: roughly R3,000 to R15,000 once-off, or a low monthly fee, depending on the number of pages and features.
  • Established agencies: R15,000 to R50,000+ upfront, usually with hosting and maintenance billed separately on top.

Those are headline build prices. The trap is that the headline is rarely the full cost.

The costs people forget to add up

A once-off build price almost never includes everything it takes to keep a site online. Before you compare two quotes, check whether each one covers:

  • Hosting — where your site actually lives, usually a monthly or yearly fee.
  • A domain name — your web address, renewed every year.
  • An SSL certificate — the padlock that makes your site secure and trusted.
  • SEO — the setup that helps you show up on Google searches.
  • Changes and maintenance — updating text, photos, prices or hours after launch.

A cheap upfront quote that leaves all of that for you to pay and manage on the side can easily end up costing more than a slightly higher price that bundles it in.

Once-off vs monthly pricing

Traditional agencies charge a large once-off fee upfront. The alternative is a monthly plan that rolls the build, hosting, domain, SEO and support into one predictable price. For most small businesses the monthly route is far easier on cash flow, because you are not trying to find several thousand rand before you have a working website earning its keep.

Our own pricing works that way on purpose: professional sites start at R250 a month with everything included and no big upfront bill. It is not the only way to buy a website, but for a small business watching its cash it is usually the sensible one.

How to compare quotes fairly

When you get a number from anyone, ask three questions: what exactly is included, what will I still have to pay for separately, and what does it cost to make changes later? Line the quotes up against those three answers and the real price becomes obvious, whatever the headline says.
